Last night's American Idol finale saw contestant Maddie Poppe duet with Kermit the Frog... and win.

The 20-year-old from Iowa and the, er, puppet performed a rendition of 1979 Muppet Movie track 'Rainbow Connection', which was also Maddie's audition song.

Judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan loved it and the public went on to crown her the winner of the show's 16th season, seeing her beat fellow finalists Caleb Lee Hutchinson (who was voted runner-up) and Gabby Barrett (who came third).

Poppe celebrated her victory – announced by host Ryan Seacrest – with a performance of the winner's song 'Going Going Gone', which will be her fist single.

Earlier on in the show, Caleb revealed that he and Maddie are in fact dating (much to the audience's delight), and the pair teamed up for a performance of 'Over the Rainbow'.

"Maddie is my pal and I've known her since the beginning of Hollywood week," Caleb told the audience. "And she actually happens to be my girlfriend."

After their duet, the show surprised the new couple with a trip to Hawaii where they'll be staying at Disney's Aulani resort – which makes them both winners, really.
