American and Iraqi forces patrolled outside the US embassy on January 2, a day after violent protests carried out by supporters of pro-Iranian militias ended.
In footage shared with Storyful by the anti-IS coalition Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve, both American and Iraqi forces could be seen beside a road outside the base.
Protesters, including many apparent members of militias backed by Iran, had surrounded the embassy following US airstrikes against Kataib Hezbollah, one of those proxy forces. The protesters set fire to exterior areas and hurled Molotov cocktails into the compound. (For full coverage of the protests and the US response, see Storyful’s collection here.)
