Emmerdale bosses blasted for Jack Sugden slur

Yahoo News UK

Having clocked up almost 30 years on the soap, Jack Sugden, played by the late Clive Hornby until his death in 2008, is something of an Emmerdale legend.

So fans weren’t impressed when the affable farmer’s name was dragged through the mud in last night’s episode of the ITV soap.

During a heart-to-heart in the woods with boyfriend Aaron Dingle, Jack’s son Robert claimed that his dad had once caught him in a compromising position with a farm hand and, wait for it, “leathered him”.

Ring any bells? No, probably not – because it never actually happened. And what’s more, it would’ve been completely out of character, wouldn’t it?

“We had this lad help on the farm,” Robert explained. “He caught us in my room. He sacked him and leathered me and I never talked about it again.

“He said it was skiving but he couldn’t look at me for weeks so I knew what it was for. I was 15. Nobody knows, not Diane, or Vic.

“He wasn’t [abusive]. He just didn’t want a son like me. So I buried it.

Hmmm…. really, Robert?

“So Jack Sugden would cover up his adopted son killing his mother but hated the idea of his other son being gay/bi? f*** off,” raged one angry viewer, while another added: “F***ing up the legend of Jack Sudgen not the best thing @emmerdale have done.”

Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, one Emmerdale geek pointed out that Robert wasn’t even in the country when this alleged “leathering” happened anyway. Oops.
