Harvey Weinstein is close to being arrested on sexual assault charges

The New York Police Department (NYPD) is reportedly close to arresting Harvey Weinstein.

According to an unnamed police official, the arrest of the disgraced film producer - who faces numerous allegations of sexual assault - is drawing ever closer.

“We’re ready to go with an arrest,“ the unnamed official told The Daily Beast, stating that the approval of Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance is required before he gets indicted.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce responded to the New York Daily News, saying: “We are still accumulating evidence“ before referring the reporter to the DA's office describing it as ”his case right now."

Vance's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Dozens of women have accused the influential producer of sexual misconduct, allegations that Weinstein has rejected as false.

As the fallout from the allegations against Weinstein have rippled outward, helping to fuel the #MeToo movement which has brought down powerful men accused of sexual impropriety, multiple law enforcement organisations have said they were investigating him.

In November, a New York City Police Department official said authorities were building a rape case against Weinstein based on “credible and detailed” allegations from actress Paz de La Huerta, as well as four others including those brought by Lucia Evan who alleged that Weinstein forcer her to perform oral sex on him in 2004.
