Police investigating two acid attacks in east London on the same night

Police are investigating two acid attacks that took place on the same evening – one of which left a woman with life-changing injuries.

The attacks, which both involved a “noxious substance”, took place near to each other in east London on Wednesday evening.

While police said there is no evidence at this stage to suggest the incidents are linked, their enquiries are ongoing.

In the first attack, Scotland Yard said police were called just before 7pm on Wednesday to a report of a woman injured after having a noxious substance thrown on her by an unknown attacker.

The 26-year-old was taken to hospital with life-changing burn injures to her leg and face after the substance was thrown at her. Tests later confirmed it was a “strong acid solution”, police said.

Detectives believe the woman was attacked in Marsh Wall, near South Quay DLR station, before running to Westferry Road where the police attended.

A Met Police statement said no arrests have been made and enquiries continue to establish the circumstances of the attack.

The statement said: “Officers are currently reviewing CCTV and pursuing a number of leads to identify the suspect, who was not seen by the victim.”

Scotland Yard said detectives are aware of a second “similar attack with a noxious substance” on the same evening at Crossharbour DLR station, which is being investigated by the British Transport Police.

A spokesman said: “At this stage, there is no evidence to suggest that these two incidents are linked but enquiries are ongoing and detectives are liaising with BTP.”
