Andrew Garfield clarifies "living as a gay man" comment
Andrew Garfield has clarified comments he made earlier this month about being "a gay man right now, just without the physical act".
The actor, who is currently starring in Angels in America at London's National Theatre, made the comments while speaking about his role in the play as a gay man living with AIDS.
Revealing he'd developed an obsession with RuPaul's Drag Race, he said: "I mean every single series of RuPaul's Drag Race. I mean every series.
"My only time off during rehearsals – every Sunday, I would have eight friends over and we would just watch Ru.
"This is my life outside of this play. I am a gay man right now just without the physical act – that's all."
Addressing accusations that he'd 'simplified' what it is to be gay, Garfield has now told Newsbeat: "That's of course not what I meant at all. The discussion was about this play and how deeply grateful I am that I get to work on something so profound.
"We were talking about, 'How do you prepare for something so important and so big?' and I was basically saying, 'I dive in as fully as I possibly can'."
Ahead of the cinema release of the play, the 33-year-old actor also wanted to make it clear he had always intended to "fully immerse" himself in the world he was portraying, saying: "My only longing is to serve and to keep the world spinning forward for the LGBTQ community in whatever way I'm meant to."
When the actor made the original comments at a Q&A session at the National, he also said: "As far as I know, I am not a gay man. Maybe I'll have an awakening later in my life, which I'm sure will be wonderful, and I'll get to explore that part of the garden."
Angels in America will be broadcast live at cinemas across the UK and internationally as part of National Theatre Live, with Part One showing on July 20 and Part Two on July 27.
