Andrew Scott set to join His Dark Materials as Colonel John Parry following 'hot priest' role in Fleabag

If you’re still not over Fleabag season two and Andrew Scott’s ‘Hot Priest’, you’re in luck. While Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge has nixed the idea of another series (at least, until she’s in her fifties), Scott is moving onto other projects.

Yesterday, it was announced that Scott is set to join HBO and BBC One’s adaptation of His Dark Materials as Colonel John ‘Jopari’ Parry.

Like his Fleabag character, Scott will only be joining His Dark Materials from its second season onwards.

The show, which is based on Sir Philip Pullman’s iconic fantasy books of the same name, will see Scott play the father of protagonist Will Parry. In the novels, Colonel John Parry accidentally finds himself in an alternate universe where every human has an animal familiar named a daemon and decides to make the best of it as an academic and shaman.

The news was revealed on His Dark Materials’ official Twitter account, where a black and white photo of Scott with Lin Manuel-Miranda was tweeted out. Miranda, who is the creative force behind hit musical Hamilton, will join His Dark Materials' first season later this year as Texan balloonist Lee Scoresby.

The caption read, “'So I have summoned you here, and you are to fly me northwards.' When Lee Scoresby met Jopari.”

This is not the first time that Scott will star in a high profile adaptation; he previously starred as the villain Moriarty on BBC's Sherlock.

Although a release date has yet to be confirmed for series one of His Dark Materials, it is expected to air towards the end of 2019. It is set to be eight episodes long and will centre on a young girl named Lyra Belacqua, who uncovers a disturbing child-abduction conspiracy with the help of her daemon Pantalaimon.

The official HBO synopsis for the series reads, “[His Dark Materials] follows Lyra, a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world. Her search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children, and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust.”

“As she journeys through the worlds, including our own, Lyra meets Will, a determined and courageous boy. Together, they encounter extraordinary beings and dangerous secrets, with the fate of both the living - and the dead - in their hands.”

Logan’s Dafne Keen will be starring as Lyra Belacqua, while James McAvoy will play her mysterious uncle Lord Asriel alongside Ruth Wilson as Mrs Coulter. Newcomer Amir Wilson will play Scott’s onscreen son Will Parry, while Keen’s own father Will Keen will also star as a character named Father MacPhail.
