West Ham have been left to sweat over the fitness of summer signing Andriy Yarmolenko after the Ukrainian was stretchered off in the defeat to Tottenham.

The winger, who joined from Borussia Dortmund, was forced off five minutes before the break after falling awkwardly when challenging for the ball at a corner, and Manuel Pellegrini admitted it ‘did not look good’.

There will be concern, too, considering Yarmolenko, 28, missed two months through an achilles injury during his time in Germany and doctors will now have to assess whether this could be a recurrence.

Speaking after the game, Pellegrini said: “I prefer to wait for tomorrow, it is better to have the diagnosis of the doctor first to be more sure what has happened with his foot.

“It's his ankle. Between his foot and the ankle so it is better to wait for tomorrow. I don't talk about it anymore, it didn't look so good but still, we have to wait.”

There was at least some good news in that the Chilean expects to be able to call on Pedro Obiang when the Hammers travel to Leicester next weekend.

The Spaniard was a late absentee against Tottenham due to a calf issue, but it does not look too serious.

“Obiang had a calf injury in the last day but I hope it will be a short one,” Pellegrini said.

“We have five players who have long injuries, now if we see tomorrow about Yarmolenko it might be more.”
