Yahoo News Is Android O really called... Octopus?!
Google has always had a playful attitude towards the changing names of its Android operating system. So far they've been named after sweet treats and desserts, but the upcoming version may signal the end to that trend.
To date, Android names have been as follows: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow and Nougat.
For months, people have been trying to guess the name of the next version, code-named 'O'. Could it be Oreo? Or Orange Chocolate? Or what about Oatmeal Cookie?
It seems that none of the above guesses are correct. The final beta version of Android O has been released, and Google usually hides an Easter egg in the preview hinting at the name of the upcoming version. This time around it's neither sweet, nor treat-y: it's an octopus.
The Easter egg can be found by heading to Settings > System > About Phone > Android Version and then holding down on the 'O' logo. Et voila! An octopus.
As far as we're aware, octopus isn't a dessert, which means that Google is either trolling its audience, or the tech giant has lost its sweet tooth and is trying something different.
'Octopus' would be an appropriate name if Google isn't dropping us a red herring. Android O's numerical name is Android 8.0. Eighth version; eight tentacles.
Whatever the real name eventually turns out to be, Android O is expected to release at some point later this summer.
