Andros Townsend Seals Crystal Palace Move

Crystal Palace have completed the £13m signing of Andros Townsend from Newcastle on a five-year deal.

Palace activated Townsend's release fee at St James' Park on Thursday and the England winger has passed a medical to become Alan Pardew's first signing of the summer.

The 24-year-old moves in the opposite direction to Dwight Gayle, who on Friday sealed a £10m switch to the Magpies from Selhurst Park.

"I'm extremely delighted," he told Palace's official club website. "I had chats with the manager and chairman [Steve Parish] before I signed and I'm pleased to be part of Crystal Palace's future.

"By the sound of things, it's going to be a bright one and I can't wait to get started."

Townsend was only at Newcastle for six months, having joined from Tottenham in January after dropping down the pecking order at White Hart Lane.

He scored four goals in 13 appearances but could not prevent the club's relegation to the Championship under the management of Rafael Benitez.

"It's fantastic that we've managed to get a player of Andros' quality into the club," Parish said.

"He has played in the Premier League for a number of years and represented England on many [11] occasions and yet he's still only 24 years old.

"Andros is another exciting attacking talent that we have added to our ranks and I can't wait to see him in a red and blue shirt in the very near future."

Townsend's arrival further strengthens Palace's options in the final third as he can play on either wing, where Wilfried Zaha and Yannick Bolasie are regulars.
