Tributes paid as Scottish actor Andy Gray dies aged 61

Tributes have been paid to Scottish actor and comedy star Andy Gray after his death at the age of 61.

The late performer was known for his role in BBC Scotland soap River City as Peter Galloway. Joining the soap in 2016, he left in 2018 due to a battle with rare blood cancer Myelodysplastic syndrome.

The Perth-born actor also enjoyed the role of Chancer in 1980s comedy City Lights, as well as parts in Naked Video and Rab C Nesbitt, and had a successful career in theatre.

BBC Scotland director Steve Carson said in a statement: "We are deeply saddened by the news that one of Scotland’s much loved comedy actors and close friend to many at BBC Scotland has passed away.

"Among many roles for the BBC he will always be lovingly remembered as audience favourites, the iconic ‘Chancer’ in City Lights and the silver tongued entertainer Pete Galloway in River City.

"On screen and in person he could always make you laugh and was one of the kindest people to have around on any production. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.”

His River City co-stars also shared tributes including on-screen wife Gayle Telfer Stevens, who plays Caitlin McLean. She said: "Not only was he an exceptional actor and entertainer who brought so much joy to so many people, he was an extraordinary man.

"When you were in his presence you could feel it was of greatness. The most kind, clever, funny beyond measure, beautiful man."

Meanwhile, A.J. Jandhu actor Sanjeev Kohli tweeted: "Andy Gray was a huge presence. Huge heart, huge brain, huge spirit, huge passion. And he will be hugely missed."

Meanwhile, Gayle Telfer Stevens, who plays Caitlin McLean, married on-screen to Gray’s character said: "Not only was he an exceptional actor and entertainer who brought so much joy to so many people, he was an extraordinary man.

"When you were in his presence you could feel it was of greatness. The most kind, clever, funny beyond measure, beautiful man."

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon added her condolences as she remarked: “So sad to hear this. Andy was a legend of the Scottish acting community, from City Lights, to panto, River City and so much more besides.

“He was also a funny and really lovely guy. He will be sorely missed by many. My condolences are with his family and friends.”
