Andy Richter Says He 'High-Fived' His Son After He Came Out to Him: 'It's Fantastic'
The comedian shares son William and daughter Mercy with ex-wife Sarah Thyre
Andy Richter is sharing the sweet way his son came out to him — and the way he reacted.
Appearing on an episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson's podcast Dinner's On Me, Richter was asked about how his son William, whom he welcomed in 2000 with ex-wife Sarah Thyre, came out to him. "He came out when he was about 11," Richter began.
"We were walking away, we had just eaten dinner at a place on La Brea in our old neighborhood," he continued. "And we were walking down the street and I was holding his hand and he said to me, 'Dad, do you know what gay or bi means?'"

"I high-fived him," Richter said. "I said, 'F--- yeah, boy, do I ever.' I said, 'Yes, I do.' He said, well he goes, 'I think that's what I am.'"
The dad of two, who also shares daughter Mercy with Thyre, said he thanked his son for telling him and the two didn't speak of it again. "But I mean, not because of me, but because we didn't need to," added Richter.
"But isn't it kind of refreshing that you didn't have to speak of it again?" Ferguson asked.
"Oh, it's fantastic. It's fantastic," the proud dad said.
Richter and Thyre divorced in 2019. In 2023, Richter married wife Jennifer Herrera in a ceremony officiated by longtime friend and comedy partner, Conan O’Brien.
Richter revealed the news of his engagement to Herrera in November 2022 after keeping the relationship under wraps. He announced the happy news on Election Day.
“Some non-election news: I got engaged! To a lady! Her name is Jennifer Herrera and she’s the best. We’ve been together since the beginning of the year, and we’re getting married next summer," he tweeted. “Hooray love!”
