German Chancellor Angela Merkel has postponed her trip to Washington to visit with US President Donald Trump due to a late-winter storm expected in the Northeast US.

Mrs Merkel had been scheduled to arrive late Monday night for meetings with Mr Trump on Tuesday but called off the trip at the last minute due to the weather, her office said.

German media reported she was rescheduling the trip for Friday but her office would only say it would take place soon.

Washington, DC, is expected to get about 6 inches of snow in the storm.

The US House told lawmakers that votes are unlikely on Tuesday due to flight cancellations caused by the storm.

In a notice from the House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, lawmakers were told that the first votes for the week are expected Wednesday night.

Most lawmakers head home to their districts on the weekend.

The Senate was in session on Monday afternoon, with a vote planned for the evening.
