Animals, mini diggers and ziplines for a fiver - this farm is a must for families this summer

There used to be a time when a petting zoo was just that - a place to go and pet animals you wouldn't usually have access to.

Nowadays, they've become so much more. Full-on farms that offer a full day out experience for families.

And there's one just over the border in Greater Manchester that's letting people in at a discounted rate this summer. Following the popularity of its Toddler Fridays, Lancaster Park and Animal Farm in Chadderton, Oldham, has extended the event to run throughout June.

The children's petting farm promises 'a great day out for all the family', with visitors invited to meet, touch and feed the animals, which range from horses and sheep, to rabbits, chickens and many more.

It has two play areas with swings, slides and ziplines dotted along 'a scenic Nature Walk' and guests can drive mini quads on the Rooster Rally, dig up the sandpit at Digger Island, or take on the pirates at the Pirate Shoot-out. At busier times there's a Caterpillar Ride, where youngsters can sit inside barrels and enjoy a trip being pulled around the field for £2 a go.

It's been praised by visitors, including one recent reviewer, who said: "A really lovely farm park where the animals come first rather than all the bells and whistles. We went today for a friend's birthday and were made to feel so welcome. We enjoyed feeding the lambs and all the animals. Incredibly good value for both entry and the bags of feed for the animals. Already planning our next visit."

Another said: "Absolutely fantastic place, lots of different activities to interact with the animals!! Lovely staff as well."

The farm hosts a number of events in the school holidays and special Halloween and Christmas events, with tickets already on sale. To find out more visit the website.
