Annabel's nightclub has angered its neighbours in Mayfair with plans to install loudspeakers to play music on its outdoor terrace.

A favourite among royalty and stars such as the Queen and Kate Moss, the private venue wants to be able to entertain its guests there with music until 3.30am.

In an application to change the terms of its licence, the club's operators insist they will only play music when the terrace's retractable 24-ton glass roof is fully closed.

But their plan has been met with fierce resistance from some residents, one of whom claimed that noise levels make being in Berkeley Square "akin to living on an industrial estate".

Writing to Westminster City Council, one anonymised resident claimed about partygoers at Annabel's who "scream with loud voices" that "rebound off the hard surfaces".

"Exterior loudspeakers would be totally unacceptable and unbearable, as well as any of their variations that are likely to increase the noise level," they added.

The unnamed resident also complained of the "cacophony" of bin men collecting rubbish in the morning, saying "the noise from 6am onwards is relentless".

"It's akin to living on an industrial estate," they said. "If this latest application is approved it will exacerbate an already impossible situation making our lives quite unbearable."

Annabel's - said to be the only nightclub the Queen has ever visited - was founded in 1963 by entrepreneur Mark Birley, who named it after his then wife Lady Annabel Vane- Tempest-Stewart.

It has been visited by the likes of The Beatles, Frank Sinatra and Richard Nixon.

The row comes little more than a year after it was relocated to a site two doors down from its original location.

Westminster City Council's licensing committee will meet on Thursday to discuss the licence application.

Annabel’s has not responded to a request for comment.
