Annanhill primary pupils fundraise for local charity in memory of their classmate's dad

Annanhill Primary students got on their bikes as part of a tribute to the memory of their classmate's dad.

P6W took part in a fundraiser to support their friend Libby McKay, and her family, to raise money for Hillhouse, a Kilmarnock charity that offers a service to young people and families who are at risk of financial hardship and poverty.

Libby, 10, and her brother Luke, 14, decided to mark what would have been their dad's 40th birthday by giving back to families in their local community.

Their dad Kevin passed away aged 31 and although both Libby and Luke were very young, he continues to be a huge part of their lives.

Together, with the support and encouragement of some of their family and friends, Luke and Libby cycled around the Isle of Cumbrae and climbed Ben Lomond.

They are yet to climb Goatfell during the summer holidays due to the ferry being cancelled last minute in May.

Luke and Libby went to Balmaha that day and climbed Conic Hill, which was a much shorter route but was a great additional challenge until they can travel to the Isle of Arran later this year.

They have now raised over £3,000 and are grateful to Annanhill Primary for organising an event to help further with the fundraiser.

Annanhill Primary teachers Miss McGougan and Miss Nicol kindly offered to donate their exercise bikes to the class for the day. The challenge was to keep both bikes moving from 9am until 3pm.

The P6W students cycled 153 miles and raised an incredible £470 for a local charity. On the day, students also participate in a 40-minute running finale. And they celebrated their efforts with water guns, confetti cannons and bubbles.

Mrs Wallace, P6W’s teacher, said: "I’m so proud of our young people who worked so hard to support their friend and raise money for a really worthwhile charity. They cycled an incredible 153 miles throughout the day and had brilliant fun during the running finale. It was an amazing day and we appreciate everyone who supported us and who donated."

Libby's and Luke's mum, Joanne, 36, said: "Luke, Libby and I would like to thank everyone who has donated to their Just Giving fundraising page. Everyone’s kindness and generosity are greatly appreciated, not only by us but also by Hillhouse.

"I am incredibly proud of Luke and Libby’s achievements and determination to fundraise as a tribute to their dad’s memory. They have managed to raise an amazing amount so far!

"Thank you to Mrs Wallace, Primary 6W and all the staff and pupils of Annanhill Primary who have gone completely above and beyond to support and encourage Libby by completing their own fundraiser for Hillhouse."
