We will finally make our long overdue return to Royston Vasey this Christmas for a series of specials - well, we never left, going by their slogan.

So the natural question to come up is whether there will be a full The League of Gentlemen series afterwards?

Well, it seems nothing is set in stone, at least going by what the show's stars said when pressed on the matter by Digital Spy on a set visit.

"We made a joke, at the beginning, is the only reason we've done it is to stop people saying, 'Will you do any more?'" Mark Gatiss said.

"And now we've realised all people will say is, 'Will you do any more?'" he added, laughing.

Reece Shearsmith added: "We'll see, we don't know how it's going to do down. We're in hope that it will be enjoyed. It's a celebration really of all that we did. We'd love to still work together."

As for returning to the series for these specials, Shearsmith continued: "Happily, it's been absolutely joyous to do it again.

"The thing is, about this return, is we don't really need to do it. We did it completely out of being a fun idea. It's been very enjoyable.

"It was easy to write, it flowed out of us. It wasn't like a torturous thing because we didn't really have any expectations other than pleasing ourselves.

"That's always been the spirit of what we've done. It's been fun!"

Gatiss was equally enthusiastic by the whole experience, and added: "It's been a riot! It's been tight, only an eighteen day shoot and it's just been great fun.

"We don't want to feel like we're a Nineties tribute act, we don't want to do one of those tours feeling like that's where it's come from.

"It's come from a good place. We've never really split up, like ABBA! It's a delight to visit it, it really has been."

Shearsmith said: "If you liked it before, I think you'll be thrilled to see some of the characters again.

"They've been off the telly for such a long time and we've not done them, I think it'll be nice to visit where they are now."

"There are a few new things but it's mainly old favourites," Gatiss added. "I just hope people enjoy it."

The new League of Gentlemen specials air December 18-20 at 10pm on BBC Two.
