In what seems to have become a flurry of blows for the royal family, the Queen's nephew David Armstrong-Jones has announced he is divorcing his wife of 26 years, Serena Armstrong-Jones. The news comes just a week after it was announced that Peter Phillips, Queen Elizabeth's eldest grandson, is separating from his wife, Autumn Phillips.
A spokesperson for Armstrong-Jones, who holds the official title of Earl of Snowdon, said: "The Earl and Countess of Snowdon have amicably agreed that their marriage has come to an end and that they shall be divorced. They ask that the press respect their privacy and that of their family."
The Earl of Snowdon is the eldest child of Princess Margaret, making him the Queen's only biological nephew. He is a furniture maker by trade, having founded a company under his professional name, David Linley, back in 1985.
David and Serena Armstrong-Jones married in October 1993, in a ceremony at St Margaret's Church in Westminster. In their almost 27 years of marriage, they went on have two children.
20-year-old Charles Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley, is in his third year studying studying Product Design Engineering at Loughborough University. The couple's second child, Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones, is just 17 and seems to have inherited her creative genes from her dad, as she hand-makes jewellery under the name Matita Jewellery.
58-year-old David and 49-year-old Serena's divorce announcement came just days after it was confirmed Peter and Autumn Phillips were also parting ways. 42-year-old Peter and 41-year-old Autumn have two children together - Savannah, 9 and Isla, 7 - who they plan to share custody of going forward.
In a statement issued on behalf of the couple, it said the decision was "the best course of action for their two children and ongoing friendship".
It is thought that they told The Queen and other royals of their decision to split last year and they haven't been seen together in public since September 2019.
