Another Sinkhole Causes Traffic Chaos In Manchester

Commuters woke up to traffic chaos in Manchester this morning after another sinkhole opened up.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed on Sunday evening that a hole had appeared in the city centre and was likely to cause disruptions.

The hole appeared on Whitworth Street at its junction with Oxford Road – an area already on a diversion route because of a previous collapse.

In August, an enormous sinkhole opened up on Mancunian Way, making national headlines.

While this sinkhole is considerably smaller, it is likely to affect commuters in a similar way.

Councillor Pat Karney, city centre spokesman, said: “This is incredibly unfortunate.

“The council has placed a moratorium on all non-urgent roadworks but this is the last thing we needed at the moment.

“We apologise to all commuters and hope they understand that most of the issues are outside our control.”

He added: “We are determined that we are on the case and this is a priority.”
