ANPR camera 'vandalised' as work begins to install Mill Road bus gate
A newly-installed ANPR camera on Cambridge's Mill Road has been vandalised ahead of works to install a bus gate. A cable appears to have been cut on the camera wiring at the junction with Devonshire Road.
It comes as work to install a bus gate on Mill Road was scheduled to start on Monday (November 11). A modal filter for the bridge was approved at a Cambridgeshire County Council meeting in October, meaning the bridge will be closed to most vehicles – with restrictions enforced by ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras.
The bridge will remain open to buses, pedestrians, cyclists, emergency services, and blue badge holders registered vehicles. Work to install the bus gate will include resurfacing, installing signage, cameras, lining, and road markings to warn drivers of the new restrictions.

A Cambridgeshire County Council spokesperson said: "We're aware of the vandalism and have reported it to the police. This criminal behaviour is not acceptable."
Most of the work on the bus gate will be carried out overnight between 7pm and 6am, with a road closure in place. Access will remain for emergency services and buses during the closure.
The bus gate restriction is expected to come into force following the Mill Road Winter Fair on December 7. There will be a 28-day period where non-exempt vehicles will receive warning notices only and, if they are exempt, would be encouraged to register online. Fines are expected to be issued from early 2025.
