Michelle Pfeiffer has been cast in Ant-Man and the Wasp as one of the most pivotal characters in the Marvel Universe.

It was announced during Marvel Studios' Hall H session at Comic-Con International on Saturday (July 22) that Pfeiffer will play Janet van Dyne, the original hero known as The Wasp.

Janet van Dyne is the mother of Hope (Evangeline Lilly) and the wife of the original Ant-Man Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), with whom she once partnered as a superhero team.

Those who saw the original Ant-Man will remember that we briefly saw Janet in her heyday (played by another actress) stopping a missile, but she tragically died young.

In one of Ant-Man's post-credit sequences, Hank Pym revealed to his daughter Hope that he'd redesigned Janet's old Wasp costume for her.

Pfeiffer joins her former Batman Returns co-star Michael Keaton in making the jump from the DC Universe over to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Also during Marvel Studios' Comic-Con panel on Saturday, Game of Thrones' Hannah John-Kamen was announced to be playing the villainous Ghost, a skilled sniper with the power of invisibility.

Somewhat surprisingly, Man of Steel and Batman V Superman star Laurence Fishburne was also confirmed to be making the jump from DC to Marvel to play Dr Bill Foster.

Bill Foster has been known as Giant Man and Giant-Man in the pages of Marvel Comics for his ability to massively increase his size, making making him the literal exact opposite of Ant-Man.

Rounding out the cast is the previously-announced Walton Goggins as Sonny Burch and Randall Park as SHIELD agent Jimmy Woo.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is released in UK cinemas on June 29, 2018 and US cinemas on July 6, 2018.
