Secret struggle: Ant McPartlin said the experience of addiction sent him 'crazy'

TV star Ant McPartlin has revealed his secret addiction to painkillers reached the point where he was "seeing things in the garden" and nearly cost him his life.

The presenter, one half of showbiz duo Ant and Dec, said he was sent "crazy" by the experience - which he has spent recent months recovering from in rehab.

At its worst, he found himself being rushed to hospital by ambulance at 5am after a terrifying overnight binge.

The 41-year-old told the Sun on Sunday: "I was at the point where anything — prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs — I would take.

"And take them with alcohol, which is ridiculous. The doctors told me, 'You could have killed yourself.''

The star, who has suffered from depression, revealed that his dependence his addiction began after a knee injury in 2014.

For the first time since then, he is now clean.

It comes after the presenter checked in to rehab in June following an "insane" binge of tramadol, morphine and alcohol which he used to numb the pain of a second recent knee operation.

Speaking to the newspaper, he recalled: “It was five in the morning and I was screaming in pain so I rang Lisa...

"I said, ‘You’re going to have to call me an ambulance. I’m in a bad way’.

“I was insane. It sends you crazy. It was to the point of hearing things, seeing things in the garden and still the pain was getting worse."
