Anthony Gordon issued a promise to Trent Alexander-Arnold after failing to take advantage of the Liverpool defender's passing ability on Saturday evening.

Gordon had the chance to score while in action for England in a UEFA Nations League meeting with the Republic of Ireland, having been brilliantly played through on goal by Alexander-Arnold deep from defence.

The Newcastle United winger was able to take control of the ball but failed to slot past Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who was quick off his line to thwart the former Everton star.

Addressing this miss after the full-time whistle, which did not come back to bite England in the end after goals from Declan Rice and Jack Grealish, Gordon told ITV: "I should have scored so I've still got a lot to work on. I owe Trent one for that pass.. I'll make up for that."

Had things played out differently during the summer transfer window, such link-up play between Gordon and Alexander-Arnold may have been seen on a regular basis this season.

Liverpool were in talks with Newcastle over a deal for the winger and were offered the chance to recruit the England international, though an agreement could not be found after the Magpies requested Jarell Quansah to head in the opposite direction.

It later emerged the Reds were willing to part ways with Joe Gomez to bring Gordon to Anfield, though a breakthrough could not be found as Eddie Howe's side sought alternative ways to raise funds to comply with profit and sustainability rules.

Gordon began his career with Liverpool but was released by the club at the age of 11 and joined city rivals, Everton. He left the Blues last January in a deal worth £45million to sign for Newcastle.

First linked with a move to Liverpool back in May, it was suggested it would take "an offer close to £100million to seriously test Newcastle's resolve". Making clear his admiration for the Reds on the record, Gordon named Steven Gerrard as his favourite player growing up and listed Mohamed Salah as a source of inspiration for his game.

He then went one step further when asked to describe the best atmosphere he has witnessed on the football pitch, telling Channel 4: "Other than St James' Park, it's Anfield by far. I think because I'm from the city, I grew up watching it. Before the game when they sing You'll Never Walk Alone, it's top level."
