Anthony Gordon has paid tribute to Newcastle United supporters after their display prior to the 1-1 draw with Manchester City. Liverpool have been right at the centre of any speculation surrounding his future at St James' Park, following concrete interest during the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old scored his second goal of the season as he converted from the spot against Pep Guardiola's star-studded side. Speaking before that showdown with the Premier League champions, Gordon revealed that he was close to extending his stay in the North East.

It comes a matter of months after intense scrutiny over his future following links with Liverpool. City dropping points allowed Arne Slot's men to move top of the Premier League - thanks to goals from Ibrahima Konate and Mohamed Salah against Wolves. Earlier on, while Newcastle and City walked out, Newcastle supporters had laid out a display for the former Everton forward with 'Gordon 10' on show from the Gallowgate End.

After logging on to his Instagram account, Gordon wrote: "Memories that will stay with me forever, thank you." However, his story at Newcastle could've been different.

Amid Newcastle's struggles to become compliant with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) during the summer, it led to them floating the shock notion of selling Gordon to Liverpool, whose admiration for the player has grown steadily during his time with Eddie Howe's side.

A proposed deal worth £75million, with Joe Gomez heading in the opposite direction for £45million, was tabled. Although Liverpool were interested in the deal, it did not come to fruition within the short time period available.

There was a suggestion that Gordon had told his Three Lions team-mates he was making the move, but now the 23-year-old appears set to extend his stay in Newcastle. Liverpool had a quiet summer with Italy winger Federico Chiesa being their only new outfield addition.

Giorgi Mamardashvili was signed, too. However, the goalkeeper will remain at Valencia for the rest of the season, before then joining up with Slot's side next summer.
