Anthony Gordon has said that his ambition is to win a trophy this season amid links with a transfer to Liverpool from Newcastle. The winger was named in the starting XI for the Toon’s clash against Southampton.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with an interest in Gordon this summer, with talks going on between the two clubs over a possible transfer earlier in the window. Those discussions broke down but the Reds are still said to maintain an interest in the England international.

Gordon was a key player for Newcastle last season, with his performances earning him a place in the England squad for this summer’s European Championships. He will be looking to continue that this season, whichever club he is playing for.

“My goal this season is to win games, and win a trophy,” he said on Adidas UK’s official Instagram page. “What I’m looking forward to about getting the 2024/25 season underway, it’s just being back in the stadium with the fans and getting a rush of adrenaline when I’m walking out.

“If I have to describe the first game of the season in three words, I would say: Excitement, fun, and opportunity.”

Liverpool have so far been frustrated in the transfer window and are yet to bring in a new player under the guidance of new head coach Arne Slot. Their interest in Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi led to disappointment with the player opting to stay with his current club.

Arne Slot spoke about not being able to sign Zubimendi in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Ipswich. "I've said many times already our squad is really strong and it's not easy to find players who can help us or strengthen the squad,” he said. “Zubimendi was one of them to be fair but he decided not to come. We go forward with the ones we have. We are in a good place.

"In the background Richard (Hughes) is trying to strengthen the squad as he can, unfortunately Zubimendi decided not to come. He did every effort and tried everything to bring him in but if a player doesn't want to come, it's obvious he's not coming.”
