How Anthony Martial's equalising goal against Newcastle cost Manchester United £8.7m

Anthony Martial’s vital goal against Newcastle last Saturday has cost Manchester United £8.7m after it triggered another payment clause in his contract.

United paid Monaco an initial fee of £36m for the France starlet on the final day of the transfer window in September 2015.

One of three additional clauses saw the club agree to pay out €10m in the event of Martial scoring 25 Premier League goals before 2019.

That moment came on Saturday evening when Martial latched onto Paul Pogba’s pass to lash home goal number 25 in the English top flight – a crucial equalising goal after his side had fallen two behind inside 10 minutes.

United are required to pay another €10m should Martial make 25 appearances for his country but the forward’s progress on the international stage has stalled as of late.

Martial has made 18 appearances for France but Dider Deschamps has not called upon the former Lyon starlet since March, leaving him out of his World Cup squad in Russia this summer.

United are also required to pay an additional €10m should their player ever be nominated for the Ballon d’Or.
