Anti-ageing expert reveals which five foods should be avoided at breakfast
An anti-aging expert has revealed the top five foods that should always be avoided at breakfast. Dr Poonam Desai has used her TikTok platform to unveil the foods people should steer clear from for a healthier start to the day.
Her recent video outlines these items with a cautionary note on optimising morning nutrition and avoiding a sugar spike early in the morning.
She states: "I'm Dr Desai and these are five unhealthy breakfast foods that we should avoid eating routinely in the morning. The first is going to be pastries - pastries include things like croissants, chocolate croissants. Second is going to be breakfast cereals. Yes breakfast cereals. It's full of sugar usually so try to avoid breakfast cereals.

"Third is going to be granola. A lot of granola tends to have oil and sugar in it - again, little nutritional value and we don't want to be having that high of a sugar spike first thing in the morning.
"Fourth is going to be pancakes and fifth is going to be things like doughnuts - you really want to avoid a big sugar spike first thing in the morning."
Doctor's five things not to have for breakfast:
Croissants
Cereals
Granola
Pancakes
Doughnuts
SurreyLive reported the dangers of a morning sugar spike are well documented; health authority Dr Michael Mosley warned that it's particularly problematic for those pre-diabetic as it often leads to a crash which can leave an individual feeling hungry—or even irritable shortly after.
Cereals, being highly processed foods, are often flagged by nutrition experts for their high sugar content. Pancakes, too, aren't the healthiest breakfast choice due to their fat, salt and sodium content.
The NHS has a site dedicated to healthy breakfast recipe suggestions. On the subject of what to have for breakfast or ‘brunch’ nutritional scientist Tim Spector said recently: “So a lot of the time I would either skip breakfast or have it late on.
"I’m working at home then I would probably have a breakfast or a brunch after 11. My go to breakfast is to change to full fat yoghurt 5050 with milk kefir and whichever berries I’ve got or fruit I’ve got in the fridge.
“If I haven’t, I get some frozen Berries out of the freezer and a nut and seed mix. I’ve got a really nice nut granola in the recipe book that I’m now using. I do big batches of that, and I absolutely love it. Or if I’m somewhere else, I will take my Zoe Daily 30 Sprinkle that on as well. So making sure that breakfast, although it’s quite nice to skip it or delay it, is a really good opportunity to put those good things into your diet when you’re really in control.”
