Anti-Brexit Activists Protest in London After Boris Johnson Announces Suspension of Parliament

Activists rallied in Parliament Square, London, on August 28, to oppose the UK’s exit from the EU and Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement that he would suspend parliament, reducing sitting days in the run up to the Brexit on October 31.

Johnson said he called the suspension to allow for a Queen’s speech on October 14 during which a new legislative program for the country would be set out. “This is a new government with a very exciting agenda,” he said.

The move sparked outcry from politicians and members of the public.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn described the suspension as “an outrage and a threat to our democracy.”

House of Commons Speaker John Bercow was quoted by the BBC as saying the impact of the suspension “would be to stop [the house] debating Brexit and performing its duty in shaping a course for the country.”
