Police responded with tear gas, water cannon, pepper spray and stun grenades to control the protests as they described demonstrators as wielding “crow bars”.

Images showed a Starbucks, Bank of America and McDonald's all had their windows smashed during the demonstrations.

Some protesters also attempted to disrupt the inauguration by preventing ticket holders from entering the venue.

Mr Trump took the Presidential oath and said power was being transferred from Washington to “the people”.

“We the citizens of America are now joined in a great national effort to rebuild our country and restore its promise for all of our people. Together we will determine the course of America and all of the world for many many years to come,” Mr Trump said.
