A wealthy antiques dealer is accused of strangling his seven-year-old daughter with a dressing gown cord, the Old Bailey has been told.

Robert Peters, 55, is charged with attacking Sophia Peters at his £1 million home in the Raynes Park area of Wimbledon, south west London.

Police and paramedics called to the house at 8am last Friday found Sophia critically injured at the large detached house.

She was taken to hospital and Mr Peters, a Chinese porcelain expert, was arrested at the scene.

He appeared in court on Saturday morning charged with attempted murder and was remanded in custody. Sophia died in hospital at 10.37am that day.

The attempted murder charge has not yet been upgraded to murder.

Reporting restrictions prevented the naming of Sophia, but these were lifted at the Old Bailey on Wednesday by Judge Mark Lucraft QC.

The court heard that Peters, who did not appear for the brief hearing, arrived at the house last Friday morning.

Peters, of Raynes Park, remains in custody and is due to appear at the Old Bailey on Friday.

The businessman, who has been married three times, runs an antiques business in Kensington, West London. He is said to have business assets of £1.3million.
