Antiques Road Trip star 'over the moon' as huge risk pays off at auction
A star of Antiques Road Trip was left "over the moon" as a huge risk paid off at auction.
In a memorable episode of BBC's Antiques Road Trip from 2012, experts James Braxton and Charles Hanson were on the hunt for unique items along the Dorset and Devon coast.
During their search, Charles headed down to an antique shop in Honiton, where he was acquainted with the owner, who he'd met before. With only two items secured, the BBC star needed to get a move on with his buys.
Speaking to the shop owner, he said: "I would like to buy a really iconic piece of furniture which has a look about it." As the man assisted Charles around the shop, he shared there was one item in particular which he may be interest in.
Showing Charles a Liberty tool, he said: "It's an Anglo-Moorish range that they did from about 1880. It's got really tightly turned mashrabiya panels, which have all been separately hand-turned. The decoration on top is very unusual."
Although the antique expert highlighted the poor quality of the upholstery, which had slight rips. When the owner declared he was looking to sell it for £650, Charles put in a counter.

He said: "I would probably part with my entire budget, that's £468.88. Ah you're a piece of work, you've got me going!" Taking it outside to inspect closer, the man agreed to sell it for all of Charles' remaining budget.
Looking at the camera, the BBC star said: "Monday going, money up in smoke. Let's hope that stool turns a wee profit in Torquay. Result: sold!
Shaking the owner's hand to secure the deal, it seemed as though Charles was unsure over his splurge as he commented: "What have I done?!" Although the owner was sure, it would fetch him a profit.
When it was time for the stool to go up for auction, the voiceover commented on the high-risk gamble as he'd spent the remaining of his money on it.
At first, the offers started small at £80 and started to slowly climb. However, as the bids grew, it was clear the stool had gained interest.
Realising he'd made a profit when the offers went over £500, Charles clenched his fist in celebration. However, the asking price kept increasing, much to the expert's surprise.
With two bidders on the phone wanting the stool, things started to heat up as James could be heard saying: "Well done mate."
In the end, the item sold for a whopping £1,050 as Charles said: "I'm over the moon!" Celebrating with a small cheer, his co-star congratulated him on the triumph.
The room burst into a round of applause for the BBC star as Charles shook James' hand in victory. The voiceover added: "Well done Charles, a very brave purchase, giving you a thorough deserved profit. You are today's winner, by a mile."
