Anton Yelchin's family has reached a settlement with Fiat Chrysler over his tragic death.

The Star Trek actor was killed in June 2016 when his 2015 Cherokee rolled backward down a driveway in his home in Los Angeles, pinning him between a mailbox and a security fence and crushing him.

His parents Irina and Viktor Yelchin filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the car company in 2016 and on Thursday (March 22) at Los Angeles Superior Court, a confidential settlement was reached between the couple and the SUV maker.

Yelchin's Jeep Grand Cherokee model was one of 1.1 million vehicles recalled around two months before the incident, due to confusing gear shifters, which the Yelchins claim led to their son's death.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Fiat Chrysler said it is pleased an amicable resolution has been reached and continued to extend its sympathies to the Yelchins.

Previously, the Yelchins have described the "hell" the tragedy had put them through.

"In spite of our unbelievable grief, [we're trying] to prevent other families from [suffering] the same tragedy," Viktor said.

"Anton was our only son, and was a remarkable human being. [He was] very modest, very simple, very honest, generous, loving.

"It's wrong – it's against nature when parents bury their own child. That's why we hope that this lawsuit will make other families never go through the same hell that we're going through right now."

The actor's death also sparked an internal investigation by Chrysler in 2016.
