Yahoo News Antonio Conte: Jamie Redknapp spells out what Tottenham must do to avoid potential ‘disaster’
Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp has urged Daniel Levy to give Antonio Conte “full licence” should the Italian take over from Nuno Espirito Santo.
Conte, who has been out of work since leaving Inter Milan in May, is in talks with Spurs about the prospect of moving to the club following the decision to sack the Portuguese only ten games into the Premier League campaign.
The former Chelsea manager was a target over the course of the summer too, although a move broke down and Spurs then embarked on a protracted hunt for a replacement for Jose Mourinho.
While Conte would come with a proven track record of winning major trophies, the former Juventus coach has a fairly notorious reputation of being quite a combustible presence should he not feel he’s being adequately backed.
To that end, Redknapp has urged Levy to relinquish control and afford Conte time and space to avoid a “disaster”.
“I do not understand why after four months you could get him, but you could not four months ago - there was a problem with the transfer budget and he could not agree with what Daniel Levy wanted to do with the club,” he told Sky Sports.
“When you have a manager like Conte, you have to give him the licence to get the players in that he wants and to play the system he wants, you can’t interfere, he does things his way.
“He has worked with Tottenham’s director of football [Fabio Paratici] before at Juventus, so that is important as that has to work, they have to marry up together and make sure they are pulling in the same direction, otherwise it can be a disaster.
“And right now, on the field Tottenham are the laughing stock of football, off field they are the envy of everyone because of the stadium and the training ground, but they are making a lot of mistakes in that boardroom.”
