Antonio Conte promises to shake hands with Diego Costa should they meet when Chelsea face Atletico Madrid

Antonio Conte has promised to shake hands with Diego Costa if they meet during Chelsea's trip to face Atletico Madrid next week.

The duo's relationship soured in January as Costa agitated for yet another transfer away from Stamford Bridge and Conte decided that he would be sold this summer.

However, a transfer worth up to £57.2m has only just been agreed with Atletico after months of tension which has seen Costa effectively on strike in Brazil since mid-July to force the move.

The duo could meet for the first time since the FA Cup Final defeat to Arsenal in May when Chelsea play at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Costa arrived in the Spanish capital on Friday afternoon to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms.

When asked if he would be prepared to shake hands if he bumps into Costa in the future, Conte said: “Yes, I have no problem."

Significantly though, the Italian wasn't willing to discuss any positive memories about Costa, despite his 20 League goals playing a major part in the club's title-winning campaign in his first season at the helm.

He explained: “There is a lack of respect for my players because Diego is an Atletico player. It’s important to talk about my players, we are working together to help Chelsea."
