Antonio Conte says he did not substitute Alvaro Morata off against Burnley because the striker missed a chance at Turf Moor, with the Chelsea boss suggesting he could stick with two forwards up front for the FA Cup semi-finals this weekend.

Conte opted to start with Morata and Olivier Giroud in attack for Chelsea's trip to take on Burnley on Thursday night - with the duo causing all sorts of problems for the hosts in the first half.

But, with the score 1-0 to Chelsea, Morata missed a glorious opportunity to double the visitors' advantage before Burnley scored and Victor Moses was then forced to rescue all three points for the visitors.

Shortly after Morata's miss, Conte replaced him with Eden Hazard - which elicited an angry response from the Spaniard on the bench.

But Conte insists he did not take the 25-year-old off because of his miss while suggesting he could start Morata up front with Giroud when Chelsea take on Southampton in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters at Turf Moor, Conte said: "Around 70 minutes I thought that it was better to put fresh strength with Hazard. He is a player that has different characteristics to Morata. I am pleased for their performances, played very well.

"Alvaro must be angry, because when you have the chance to score you have to score and it can change your confidence. He was angry with himself for his missed chance.

"But I have to see his whole performance and it wasn’t possible in the past to play with two strikers. They did a great job, as did the whole team.

"This could be an option for Sunday or the future. This was the first time we try it and we had good responses. It could be an option.

"When you have players to show you the desire to sacrifice without the ball it is great. We surprised them with two strikers and they showed that."

He added: "To see Giroud and Morata, to play in this way and see good combination and link with them and press with and without the ball, this is the right way to have satisfaction in the future."
