AOL's AIM instant messaging service is shutting down

Before MSN Messenger, before Yahoo Messenger and definitely before Facebook Messenger, there was AOL's own long-running instant messenger, AIM.

But while the service was, for many of us, our first foray into the wild world of the world wide web, it looks like it has well and truly run its course 20 years after its introduction, as AOL's parent company Oath announced today (October 6) that the service will be shutting down by the end of the year.
