Apartment Block Collapses Just Hours After Residents Spot Huge Cracks In Walls

An entire Spanish block of flats tumbled down to the ground just hours after residents spotted large cracks in its walls.

Fire crews were called to the 1960s-built apartments in Carabanchel, Madrid, just before dawn at 4 a.m. this morning (Monday).

Some 57 tenants were evacuated from 40 homes on the block.

The entire rear of the property then suddenly gave way at around 9 a.m. Only the facade was left standing.

Madrid’s newly-elected left-wing Mayor Manueal Carmena said a full investigation would be launched into the terrifying incident.

Video footage filmed by Madrid’s Fire Service show the remnants of the buildings.

Residents are being housed in emergency accommodation at nearby hotels.

One resident claimed that the cracks had appeared several months ago and had been due to be repaired next month.

But they got “much worse overnight”, he added to El Pais.
