Idris Elba thinks the next James Bond should be female because it’s “time to do something different” with the character.

The Luther actor has said that, while there is “no such thing as a black Bond”, the character could benefit from a change.

In a chat with Variety at Sundance Film Festival, Elba mused: “Are we interested in having a Bond character other than being a male?

“Could be a woman, could be a black woman, could be a white woman, but I think, that character, everybody would like to see it have — do something different with it, why not?”

Elba has long been at the top of film franchise fan’s wishlist but the actor has remained very distant from the reports.

In an interview with the New York Times last year, Elba rubbished claims he would take on the role.

He told the publication: ““I think it's more about, we just want to have a black guy play James Bond rather than Idris Elba, the actor, play James Bond. That's the part that I'm like, 'Ugh, come on’.”

Daniel Craig has signed on for his fifth and final movie as the 007 agent, hitting screens in 2019.

Meanwhile, Elba’s first foray into directing, crime film Yardie, premiered in Utah on January 20.
