'You've put my family in a death trap': angered resident hits out at council after block fails fire safety tests

A family-of-five has appeared on Good Morning Britain as their mother has lamented the hasty evacuation from her block in Camden, resulting in the family being housed in a cramped bedsit.

Presenter Piers Morgan also criticised the council for putting the family in a "death trap home", before forcing them to evacuate and live in cramped conditions.

The mother, Chantel Peters, spoke of being stuck in a bedsit with her four children, and claims to be sharing two single beds between them all.

She also claimed the block in Camden she was forced to evacuate Camden was a "deathtrap" with no sprinklers or fire alarms.

Ms Peters said: "I do not have sprinklers, I do not have a fire alarm, there's not even a box to press to tell others there's a fire.

"You've put vulnerable people in a death trap. Some people are disabled, there's people with pets, there's pregnant people, you are messing with people's lives and this is disgusting.

The mother said those responsible "need to go to jail" and that "all of us need to come together as a community and deal with this."

Directing her anger at Shadow Housing Minister John Healey, she said: "You are all up to something and I am not having it".

Piers Morgan agreed with her, and said "I understand completely the anger, if I had four young kids and had been forced to evacuate a death trap, I'd be angry as well".

After being forced to evacuate the "death trap" block in Camden, the mother-of-four was moved to a bedsit.

She showed 5 News inside the small room and complained of the cramped conditions.

She said: "You are not making me stay here with my four kids. You're disgusting, get me out".

Pointing to two single beds pushed together, she said: "This is where me and my four kids are sleeping".

"We can't even put nothing anywhere, this is the wardrobe and I've got to have this one wardrobe for me and my four girls, we are living out of bags.

"Look at the kitchen, who lives like this? What danger is that? A sink, a hob, on top of a fridge, you feel the heat in here.

"They haven't got no fans for us. Imagine four kids screaming, she ain't got nowhere to play.

"The noise and everything is too much, we can't live like this".

She claimed the council had asked her to live there for 28 days after being evacuated from her "death trap" block.

Camden Council has been contacted for comment.

Many families have been evacuated from their accommodation in Camden after the London Fire Brigade told told the Council the safety of residents “could not be guaranteed”.

During an inspection that day it had found faults not only with the external cladding on four 22-storey tower blocks on the estate, but also with internal fire doors and the insulation around gas pipes.

On Saturday the Government announced that cladding samples from 27 high-rise buildings in 15 local authorities around Britain - ordered in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster which claimed at least 79 lives - have failed safety tests, raising the prospect of further mass displacement.
