'It was designed for terrible things to happen:' We spoke to someone who said she was 'locked indoors' with 'no food or water' at the chaotic Fyre Festival

A luxury festival in the Bahamas has descended into chaos as party-goers have been left without food or water and severe flight delays home.
Fyre Festival, advertised as "a cultural moment created from a blend of music, art, and food" on the island of Great Exuma, has been branded a "disaster" and a "scam" on social media.
Lamaan Gallal, a student at Northeastern Universty in Boston, flew out to the event, but quickly turned around after seeing the conditions on site.
Gallal is currently stranded at Exuma International Airport, close to where the festival is being staged.
She gave Business Insider the following account of her ordeal. Fyre Festival did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
"Don't even get me started about the 'site' of the festival. It was designed for terrible things to happen there," she told us over Twitter direct messages.
"The moment we got there and I started to realise all the legal and safety concerns. I got this adrenaline rush that we had to get out," she said.

"There was no light for night time. The tents could not be closed and there was no security," Gallal added.
"Everyone you spoke to had a different answer and no-one knew who was in charge. The ultimate thing was that there were no [phone] chargers or electricity outlets. We couldn't charge our phones and there was barely service."

She posted a number of photos from the site on Twitter, including images of the catering and toilet facilities.

Gallal, like many other festival goers, left the site and attempted to get a flight home. Here they ran into further trouble.
"We could barely find a way to get to the [back] airport and when we finally did, we waited for hours," she said.
"They got us on a plane at 1:30 [a.m.]. We stayed on the plane and they stalled us for five hours for no reason, going down and up the rows checking passports. They made us get off the plane and back on again and said some b******t about the head count being off."
"Then, of course, everyone is tired, hungry, thirsty. People were falling asleep. They said nothing every time people got up and asked why we still haven't moved."

Gallal continued: "Then at 6:30 a.m. they said sorry everyone has to get off the plane because we've kept you on the tarmac for longer than legally acceptable and we'd be violating a federal law if we fly. Now we are in this little room in the airport, they chained the doors because people wanted it open for fresh air."

"They're treating us like we did something wrong. People from Fyre said 'don't worry we will have food and water to you in an hour.' That's 24 hours after we all arrived.
"Everyone told him to f**k off on the phone and we don't want anything from them but to leave and get our money. Now we are stuck with a plane reportedly coming to take us to Miami at 8:30 [a.m.]."
Gallal claimed that the conditions were so bad, a person fainted and that their security on the island has been compromised — saying one man was attacked and robbed by security officials.

On Friday afternoon, the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism apologised for the problems. Below is its statement in full:
"We are extremely disappointed in the way the events unfolded yesterday with the Fyre Festival,” said the statement.
"We offer a heartfelt apology to all who travelled to our country for this event. Tourism is our number one industry and it is our aim to deliver world class experiences and events.
"Hundreds of visitors to Exuma were met with total disorganisation and chaos. The organisers of Fyre recently asked the Minister of Tourism for support for their private event.
"The Ministry of Tourism is not an official sponsor of Fyre Festival. Given the magnitude of this undertaking, the MOT leant its support as we do with all international events.
"We offered advice and assisted with communications with other government agencies. The event organisers assured us that all measures were taken to ensure a safe and successful event but clearly they did not have the capacity to execute an event of this scale.
"A team of Ministry of Tourism representatives is on the island to assist with the organisation of a safe return of all Fyre Festival visitors.
"It is our hope that the Fyre Festival visitors would consider returning to the Islands of the Bahamas in the future to truly experience all of our beauty."
