Good news, Doctor Who fans – Netflix has served up a treat to ring in the New Year.

Series 10 is finally set to drop on the UK streaming site on January 1, so what better way to start 2019 than watching Peter Capaldi's final outing as the Doctor.

Netflix confirmed the news today (December 18), along with a number of other release dates, including Peaky Blinders series 4 and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 13.

Of course, that isn't the biggest Doctor Who event happening on January 1, with a New Year's Day special airing on BBC One starring Jodie Whittaker's Doctor.

It's a bit of a shake-up as the show traditionally airs a special on Christmas Day, though showrunner Chris Chibnall has explained why the move made sense.

"The episode is set on New Year's Day," he confirmed. "There's no better way to start a new year than with Doctor Who."

Chibnall went on: "You want the special to feel like an event... like an opener and a finale all rolled into one.

"You want it to be accessible to those who've missed the series, but you also want to reward the audiences and fans who've been there for the whole ride.

"Most of all, you want it to feel like a treat: a big, thrilling, explosive, moving, cheeky, surprising treat. Basically, you want the special to be epic. And I promise, it's going to be epic."

The Doctor Who New Year's special airs January 1 at 7pm on BBC One.
