The first Far Cry 5 DLC finally has a release date. Hours of Darkness is set during the Vietnam War, where players take on the role of an American soldier fighting to make it back to safety after a helicopter crash.
According to the trailer above, Hours of Darkness features a squad of American soldiers that all survived the crash. The narration in the trailer says “If you’re lucky, everyone makes it out alive.” It could mean an interesting take on the Far Cry formula by adding permadeath to your squadmates. It also seems to be a very serious DLC, so expect this to be more Apocalypse Now than Tropic Thunder.
It will be curious to see how big these DLCs will be. Previous Far Cry DLC have ranged from standalone games to small bonus missions. Seeing as how there are three planned DLCs, it also seems likely the developers aren’t going to have time to make huge worlds. New assets will have to be created for each entry, especially the Mars DLC.
Also, judging by the nature of the story, it seems Hours of Darkness might be more linear than your typical Far Cry experience. This isn’t a bad thing, since Far Cry mechanics would work well in just about any type of game. But if the story is about a team getting to an extraction point, it seems odd to make that an open-world thing. It seems more suited for a straight-shot type approach.
Regardless of what Hours of Darkness ends up as, I’m excited to play it. Far Cry 5 has some of the tightest controls in a game, and putting those controls in different experiences sounds awesome to me.
Far Cry 5: Hours of Darkness will be available on June 5 for PS4, Xbox One and PC. A copy of Far Cry 5 is required to download the game, and a Season Pass with all three DLC packs is available.
So what do you think? Are you excited to play Hours of Darkness in two weeks? Do you think the Mars or Zombie DLC for Far Cry 5 will be next? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
