'The Handmaid's Tale' Cast and Creatives Tease No One Is Safe in Season 2: 'Anyone Could Die'

Plus, six more secrets we learned about season two from the panel at PaleyFest in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Praise be... an all-new season of The Handmaid's Tale is almost here!

In anticipation of season two, which kicks off Wednesday, April 25, on Hulu, some of the cast and creatives from the series attended a panel at PaleyFest at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles over the weekend, where they teased what's to come in Gilead.

The panel kicked off with three sneak peek looks at the second season. In the first clip, the handmaids can be seen standing in the pouring rain and being forced to hold heavy rocks out with one hand as a punishment from Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) for their resistance to throw stones at fellow handmaid Janine (Madeline Brewer) when directed to in season one. But punishment turns to celebration when the secret Offred (Elisabeth Moss) has been keeping -- that she's carrying a baby for Commander Fred Waterford (JosephFiennes) and Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) -- is revealed to Aunt Lydia and the rest of the handmaids. In an additional clip, guests also got to see another glimpse at Ofglen's (Alexis Bledel) new life in the Colonies, which was first revealed in a teaser released earlier this month.

A third clip showed Offred waiting to be seen by a doctor, where we hear her talk back to Serena, revealing the new, rebellious and feisty attitude she's developed. Once her examination was complete, a technician comes into the room and mysteriously tells her goodbye using her real, pre-Gilead name, June Osborne, shortly before she discovers a key was left in her boot.

From what we witnessed in the teaser clips and heard in the full panel discussion, it certainly sounds like fans will have a lot to look forward to in season two. Creator/showrunner Bruce Miller teased that "no one is safe," telling the audience that "the terrible thing about Gilead is that sometimes the worst-case scenario is that they don't die."

"Anyone could die," added executive producer Warren Littlefield.

Here are six other secrets we learned about season two from the panel!

1. Another character escapes Gilead.

While he wouldn't reveal who, Miller confirmed this is something that will happen this season.

2. Ofglen (aka Emily) will be assigned to a new commander.

We already knew that Bledel's character would be working in the Colonies this season, but we now know that she will still be under the supervision of a commander. That role will be portrayed by Bradley Whitford, who was previously announced as a new season two castmember.

3. Luke and Moira have developed a close friendship based on the mutual love they have for June.

As fans may recall from season one, June's best friend, Moira (Samira Wiley), escaped Gilead and found June's former husband, Luke Bankole (O-T Fagbenle), in Canada.

"Luke and Moira are living together now, trying to find a way to find common ground," Fagbenle explained. "They’ve been through two quite separate traumatic events, but they share a history and they share a kind of family. They’re almost brother and sister. But at the same time, it’s hard to communicate what they’re going through emotionally."

And despite the fact that Moira found a way to escape Gilead, Littlefield says there's no way to fully "escape" that place. "Gilead is within you" is a theme that will be heavily explored this season. "[Those who escape] haven’t fully left Gilead, and Gilead hasn't left them," he added.

4. There's a theme of motherhood, and fans will be introduced to June's mother.

Cherry Jones will be taking on the role of Holly Osborne. "When we start the season, [June] has a child, and in this explosive, volatile chess game of season two, all her moves are for that unborn child and what life will be for that unborn child," Littlefield explained. "[Growing up], June was an only child. [She thought] her mom was from an old time of feminism ... so, we get to play that dynamic quite a bit."

5. Fans will also learn more about Serena's upbringing as June prepares for the arrival of her Gilead baby.

"We're certainly going to keep exploring another significant part of Serena's past," Strahovski said, immediately biting her tongue as she asked, "Am I allowed to say that? I just did."

“Bruce and the team, they never take the most obvious route," she continued. "Reading the scripts is really exciting for us [on the cast], and you don’t really know what to expect. I think if that’s happening for us, if we’re so surprised and the scenes are so juicy and challenging, it’s going to translate that way for the audience.”

6. The world within Gilead will be expanded.

Fans will finally get a better idea of how America became Gilead, and what happened to the press as the new society was formed.

“It’s a very ambitious year for us where those themes play out, as well as [answering], 'How does this all happen?'” Littlefield said. “You want to know, 'How did it happen?' So, part of the ambition of year two is to show that, the moment where we went from America to Gilead. That’s very powerful, and only brings us closer to these characters and understanding this world.”

Added Miller, "We tell some stories about what happened to the press. We take things that are mentioned and follow our curiosity."
