Donald Trump has defended his use of social media in a series of tweets, hitting back at claims that it is not presidential.

The President has come under fierce criticism from both Democrats and Republicans in recent days after using Twitter to suggest MSNBC presenter Mika Brzezinski had been “bleeding badly from a face-lift” when he saw her six months ago.

After stepping up his criticism on Saturday by calling Ms Brzezinski "dumb as a rock", Mr Trump later fired back at critics of his use of Twitter and renewed his feud with CNN.

"The FAKE & FRAUDULENT NEWS MEDIA is working hard to convince Republicans and others I should not use social media - but remember, I won.......the 2016 election with interviews, speeches and social media. I had to beat #FakeNews, and did. We will continue to WIN!"

He added: "My use of social media is not Presidential - it’s MODERN DAY PRESIDENTIAL. Make America Great Again!"

For the first time, Mr Trump also pinned a tweet, so that it stays at the top of his feed, that attacked CNN. "I am thinking about changing the name #FakeNews CNN to #FraudNewsCNN!" he said.

The broadcaster has been a frequent target of the president's attacks on the media, but he stepped up the attacks recently after the resignations of three of its journalists.

The story, which was retracted, was about a supposed investigation into a pre-inaugural meeting between a Mr Trump associate and the head of a Russian investment fund.

Mr Trump used the resignations last week to resume his attack on the network's credibility.

Corey Lewandowski, Mr Trump’s former campaign manager, called the president the “Hemingway of Twitter,” after his tweets about Ms Brzezinski.

“He’s the Ernest Hemingway of Twitter,” Mr Lewandowski said on Fox News.

“He’s taken down his opponents on Twitter many times. You can ask ‘Little Marco’ or ‘Lyin’ Ted’ or ‘Crooked Hillary.’ We all know the names or ‘Low Energy Jeb,’” he continued, referencing Trump’s branding of his 2016 presidential opponents.

“But when you oppose Donald Trump, beware of his hundred million social media followers,” he said.

The president's use of Twitter has caused a number of controversies in the past, including  attacking London Mayor Sadiq Khan after the terror attacks in the capital last month and alleging in March that Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower

He says Twitter is a vital way to communicate directly with the American people because of what he sees as bias in mainstream media against his administration.
