Here's when Star Wars: Episode 9 will begin filming
The cast and crew are gearing up to begin filming Star Wars: Episode 9 in only a few months' time.
Lucasfilm and director Colin Trevorrow are currently in the development stages of the third entry in the current cycle of sequels, a film which could signal the end of the Skywalker saga.
Earlier reports tipped the start of filming on Episode 9 for later in the year, but an extensive profile on the Star Wars cast in Vanity Fair reports that the movie will go before the cameras from January 2018.
A bit of extra time was necessary following the news of Carrie Fisher's death last December as Trevorrow was finishing an Episode 9 script. His original version would have featured General Leia as the central hero.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has previously denied that any unused or digitally-created footage of Fisher will be used (as was done in Rogue One), despite earlier comments to the contrary from the actress's brother.
"We don't have any intention of beginning a trend of re-creating actors who are gone," Kennedy reiterated in the franchise's Vanity Fair profile.
Where the franchise goes after Episode 9 isn't entirely clear just yet, but Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that the Star Wars team are currently planning 15 more years' worth of movies.
"We've got a creative team actually thinking about what could be another decade-and-a-half of Star Wars stories," Iger has said. "It's kind of mind-blowing spending an afternoon with a creative team thinking about that."
Before we even get to Episode 9, Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released on December 15. The new Vanity Fair will be released on June 6 and is available to subscribers now.
