It's the light-hearted space odyssey that some say is doing Star Trek better than Star Trek – but when and how can UK folk watch Seth MacFarlane's The Orville?

The Orville in the UK: How can I watch?

The good news is that The Orville has secured a UK broadcaster – it's coming to FOX on Thursday, December 14 at 9pm.

You'll also be able to watch each new episode On Demand via your Sky package, once it's aired on the Thursday night.

Not got a Sky package? Don't want to sign up to one? Pride yourself on being a law-abiding citizen? Well, whoop whoop, you have been rewarded: you can go with NOW TV instead.

Its Entertainment Pass is currently available on a free 14-day trial – so two weeks of its goodies for nothing – then it's £7.99 a month thereafter if you carry on with it. Obviously we'd hold off till December if it's specifically The Orville you want to watch in your two free weeks.

Up front payment deals for new customers include:

- 12 months of the Entertainment Pass for just £45 - worth over £95.

- 12 months of Entertainment + Sky Cinema for just £99 - worth over £215. (Also available to existing customers.)

You sure can – here's a taste of all the antics in store...

The Orville cast: Who stars in the series?

Seth MacFarlane stars as Ed Mercer, an officer in the Planetary Union's line of exploratory space vessels whose career took a downturn following his divorce. Mercer is given his first command on The Orville, only to discover that his ex-wife, Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki), has been assigned to be his First Officer.

A sort of post-modern, tongue-in-cheek take on the original 1960s Star Trek, The Orville also stars Penny Johnson Jerald (Castle, 24) as chief medical officer Dr. Claire Finn and Scott Grimes (ER, Party of Five) as Mercer's best friend, helmsman Lt. Gordon Malloy.

The Orville episodes: How many are there to watch?

The Orville was given a 13-episode order by FOX in the US in May 2016 and launched in the States back in September.

Then, 7 weeks into its run, the series was recommissioned. "Once again Seth has struck a powerful chord with viewers," said Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn.

"He has delivered a series full of optimism, drama and his trademark humor. We want to thank him and the rest of the talented cast, as well as the producers and crew, for an incredible first season. We can't wait to see where The Orville travels in the second."

Though a second season has been confirmed, there's no word yet on whether it'll also span 13 episodes or if it'll run longer.

The Orville: Can I watch online on Netflix or Amazon Prime?

As of right now, The Orville is not expected to arrive on Netflix either in the US or the UK.

It's not currently available to watch on Amazon in the UK either. However, The Orville episodes are available via Amazon US – at a rate of $2.99 per episode, or $24.99 for the entire first season. (Opting for the latter option will save you around one dollar per ep, FYI.)
