For Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, Netflix was the natural home for a stop-motion animation movie about Michael Jackson's chimp Bubbles.

Taika is following up his foray in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with an ode to Michael and Bubbles's friendship, perhaps not the path most directors would take after shooting the biggest film of their career.

When Digital Spy recently caught up with Taika, he explained to us why the streaming service that has invested big in oddball projects like The OA and Okja was right for him.

"Netflix are very supportive, they're a great company who came on board with us, believing in this project, which really when you look at it, is a crazy idea to do a film like this," he admitted to us.

"But it's actually a very unique way of looking at Michael Jackson's life from the point of view of someone who's so close to him.

"To be honest i'm not sure if they've interviewed Bubbles and what information he actually gave them in terms of the authenticity of his stories, that's yet to be seen. Who knows if Bubbles will be taking us to court at some time in the future?"

Now, that would be the trial of the century! Taika, who'll be directing the film with Mark Gustafson, has previously assured the late King of Pop's fans that he will not mock Michael or Bubbles in his film.

"Most people know I'm a huge Michael Jackson fan, so the main thing for me is to make sure it's respectful of him and his legacy.

"I'm not interested in making a biopic; I want to focus on telling a story that blends fact and fantasy, about an animal trying to make sense of the world."

Shamone and hee hee, we're on board!

His current movie Thor: Ragnarok opens on October 24 in UK cinemas and on November 3 in the US. Watch a trailer for Thor: Ragnarok:
