Star Wars: The Last Jedi has some major twists that have divided fans – from Rey's parents to those new Force powers – but perhaps the biggest has to be the fate of Snoke.

If there was one thing everyone came away talking about from The Force Awakens – besides how similar it was to A New Hope – it was our new, haggard master villain Snoke.

However Rian Johnson's decision to off Supreme Leader Snoke midway through Star Wars: The Last Jedi before he's, well, done anything, was very bold – but also kind of disappointing.

Fan theorists were outraged at two years spent pouring over elaborate Snoke theories only to see the old wrinkly bastard sliced in two, along with our dreams of an elaborate backstory.

But now director Rian Johnson has explained to Empire in their Spoiler Podcast that he "wasn't interested in where Snoke came from".

"I like Snoke as a character," Rian explained. "I think as Andy Serkis plays him, he's delicious, he's evil and he's fun.

"But Kylo to me is where the interesting stuff is, and the notion of clearing the deck of the Vader/Emperor dynamic, so that all bets are off in the final movie in terms of the villainy is going to play out, that to me seemed to me like a much more interesting thing."

But what about Snoke's backstory? Which of those many, many theories is the right one? Why didn't we find that out in the film? Well, it turns out there was a very simple reason.

Rian continued: "In terms of who he is and where he came from. It's just another thing where if he had stopped in the middle of any of these scenes and gave a monologue about when he was so-and-so and rose to power from so-and-so, it would have just stopped the scene dead in its tracks and we would've cut it out in the editing room, because dramatically it has nothing.

"In the same way if the Emperor had given a big thing about his backstory in Empire or Jedi – it just doesn't belong there. The prequels, it does, because it's the Emperor's story, but it's not Snoke's story."

Rian went on to explain that it doesn't matter to Rey and her story, so it doesn't matter to us, the audience. However, he was quick to caveat how much he loves Star Wars theories and wasn't trying to ruin them.

"As a Star Wars fan for many years, I think giving everyone a backstory and that kind of world building, I don't want to poo poo that, I think that's awesome and fun.

"But at the end of the day, these movies are stories, and every single one of the Star Wars movies has done what's necessary for their story and we had to do the same thing."

Elsewhere in his juicy and spoilery interview, Rian revealed that the closing scene was almost cut, as well talking as General Leia's new force powers, and where the heck The Knights of Ren are, considering we keep hearing so much about them.

Meanwhile to console you in this new Snoke-less world we've compiled some of the craziest fan theories about him, as well as some details on his other secret apprentice.
