Apparently, Prince Harry Is a Big Fan of the Ghost Emoji 👻

When it comes to emoji use on their official social media channels, the British royal family is somewhat reserved—a.k.a. don't expect to see the likes of 😎, 😖, or 😈 in posts representing the monarchy.

In general, they punctuate birthday messages with a classic balloon and birthday cake and use the flag symbols in posts about various countries in the Commonwealth. Back when Harry and Meghan used the @SussexRoyal handle, they sometimes posted updates with a red heart. And Clarence House, the official communications channel of Prince Charles and Camilla, has been known to literally illustrate their posts. For example, the garden-themed post below includes a flower emoji, and one of a butterfly.

But when it comes to private messages, Prince Harry is a bit more, well, creative. According to the Finding Freedom, a forthcoming biography of the Sussexes by royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, Harry is a big fan of this ghost emoji in his private texting correspondence: 👻.

"His messages were often short and full of emojis, in particular the ghost emoji, which he often used instead of a smiley face," reads an excerpt from the book published in People.

"For what reason? Nobody knows. But Meghan found his texting etiquette funny and adorable, just like the prince."

Clearly she found the emoji usage endearing (or perhaps she was so head over heels that she didn't mind the kooky character). Per the book, just three months into the relationship they were exchanging "I love yous."

"It was Harry who said it first," a friend of Meghan's shared with the authors, "but Meghan immediately replied, 'I love you, too.' From there it didn’t take long for them to begin talking in non-oblique terms about their future."
