Rumours of Apple phasing out the iPod have been circulating on the internet for years now, but today (July 27) Apple confirmed that the rumours have not been exaggerated at all.

Yes, it appears the iPod nano is no more – and it's taking the iPod shuffle with it.

Between the discontinuation of the iPod nano and the iPod shuffle, and 2014's discontinuation of the iPod classic after the launch of the iPhone 6, now your only iPod option is the Touch. But at least that comes with two storage options, so there's still a bit of choice.

An Apple spokesperson confirmed the discontinuation in a statement given to The Verge, saying: "Today, we are simplifying our iPod lineup with two models of iPod touch now with double the capacity starting at just $199 and we are discontinuing the iPod shuffle and iPod nano."

It looks like the same applies in the UK, too, with Apple's UK page only advertising the iPod Touch as a product available to purchase – and even that's tucked away under the Music tab.

Apple hasn't really devoted a lot of time to its iPod range in recent years, most recently giving the iPod nano a new batch of colours for its seventh-generation update in 2015, with the iPod shuffle experiencing the same cosmetic updates recently too.

And, to be fair, it's not like many of us are buying music anymore either – at least not digitally...

Vinyl may be enjoying a comeback, but our digital music habits have switched to streaming, with Apple Music and Spotify providing fuss-free subscription options for music lovers. Which, unfortunately, means the iPods have become pretty obsolete.

Doesn't mean we won't all miss them, though:
